Everyday is free RPG day here at 1km1kt, but once a year your local gamestore has a free RPG day. TODAY is free RPG day!

What's your plans today? Going to go in and look for something in particular? Going to run a game or two? It's always a good excuse to get involved in games that you'd never normally play.

Give us your Free RPG day post event breakdown. :-)

Unfortunately nothing for me. Mom's coming from out of town for a visit so we'll be busy with that.

I am not sure how I feel about Free RPG day, which is why I don't blog about it. I can see that there is good to be had: people going to their local games store and playing a game they never had before. I also can see that getting hold of quick starts are, in a sense, free. However, I still feel that Free RPG Day is more a cynical marketing day where companies can pretend that they are giving stuff away for free when really it's just a cut-down barely-playable version of a commercial game.

It's the same reason I campaign against quick start games every year at the Ennies. Each year there will be a "truly free" RPG listed, and I urge everyone to get behind that. There's been some success the past two years with Swords and Wizardry and Old School Hack.

If free RPG day was about getting people to play more free RPGs then I'd be all over it.

Why not go down to your local game store next year and run ICAR, and give away the core rules there and then! Show them that there is a world of Free RPGs out there.

Plus, part of Eclipse Phase being free is that you can get it for free from Rob Boyle () rather than being CC-BY-NC-SA like Degenesis where the only way to get the English version is to purchase it, not exactly horrible but still somewhat against its own principles since it's hard to get access to.

this makes me want to take an old idea of mine, the compo that has a "your game in print" prize and expand upon it. we get a kickstarter set up to get the cost for the prize, winner not only gets copies of his own game but the game will be printed to be given to gaming stores all over to be give away on free rpg day! imagine walking in to a store and seeing a full in print game for free.....muuuuhahahahahah
