[Marshmallow Pony Adventures] Made a Breakthrough

I've been working on and off on a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic hack of Fate for the past year. I was never satisfied with it though. It was fun both creating and playing it but it felt like fitting a square peg in a round hole. If you've seen my blog then you know that I've been poking at some mechanics for a cartoon game. Well I made a breakthrough this week after rereading Primetime Adventures, a Homestuck Apocalypse World hack, and an old interview with Fred Hicks where he talks about innovation in Fudge.

What I've come up with is a Fate game which takes a departure from the structure and dynamics of most others. There's a greater and simpler focus on aspects outside of conflicts and a scene based structure where players can influence aspects even when their character is not in the scene. I'm in the process of lifting Kerberos Club's skill building mechanic and adapting it to handle ponies' talents and also refitting the tier system to interact with the talents and the Elements of Harmony in a way that's accurate to the show.

I'll hopefully have a rough draft of the rules up by Wednesday.

I want to publish this as a new game in its own right. I've started creating a setting for it inspired by the My Little Pony franchise, but I hope to make it an obvious homage and not, ya know, trademark and copyright infringement. ;-)

I am now required to link to "" which gives the show a 4th Edition D&D treatment in a vein similar to "DM of the Rings" or "Darths and Droids". The comic is based on another author who argued MLP is a D&D game on her . Said blog author also created a variant for Unknown Armies "".

Should I be scared that I casually know about this much RP material relating to a children's show I have never watched? Or does that hold off until I make a game based on Nu Pogodi?

It took a bit longer than I expected, but here's the first alpha version of the game. The site's still under construction too.

It's very bare-bones at the moment. Most of it is more outlining what it'll look like than anything else. It'll get better over the next few versions as I flesh out the specifics and insert the Fate jargon.

Specifically, the next thing I'm going to be working on is defining exactly what the players can do when their character is not in a scene. Specific ways of manipulating aspects, different kinds of aspects they can use, and how they manipulate the events of the story.
