I completely understand where you're going. I'd offer this as an option and it goes along with CA's dark side points.

Make being unfriendly an option. Make it tempting and make it look like if they player stays on top of things they could maintain the power of being unfriendly. But the farther they move into that territory the greater their fall will be.

Now there is no physical combat mech per say, but it is being unfriendly in the extreme.
