SAVEgame

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005

SAVEgame is a role-playing game set in the world of computer and videogames. This historical period began in the 195’s, with the creation of a game that became known as Pong. The creation of videogames has become a multi-million dollar industry, with technological advancements improving the videogame experience from a pair of white blobs trying to hit a smaller white blob past each other, to nearly photo-realistic three-dimensional representations of people with imaginary backgrounds armed with fantastic weapons trying to kill each other’s nearly photo-realistic representation.

Players take on the roles of videogame characters in a (mostly) consensual videogame world. SAVEgame is all about what videogame characters do when not being possessed by demons, and forced by their to take on all manner of ridiculous quests, or to be the last, best hope for their race/planet/whatever. However, often that is exactly what videogame characters do with their free time anyway…

Morpho Londinium

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005

A live-action role-playing game for eight players set at a celebration in a London house for the seminal work of modern entomology — M. Malpighi’s treatise on the silkworm. Discussion of the treatise and science masks the secrets and politics of the characters. Action is through themed powers of each of the characters, who are each identified with an insect, plus a set of four possible actions.

Two hosts and six guests gather to celebrate and discuss the latest treatise to be published by The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge. The current is on the anatomy of the silkworm, and is destined to be the seminal work of modern entomology. The author is an Italian professor of medicine, Marcello Malpighi, the only Italian member admitted thus far to the Royal Society.

Labyrinthiathan

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005

It’s a game of grand horror set during the American Civil War. I like to think it’s Lovecraftian in a way. The dice mechanic is simple and character creation uses special tarot-like cards. Inspired by “The House of Leaves,” are you prepared to face the darkness?

The Hour Between Dog and Wolf

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005

In the years between 1764 and 1767, something killed over a hundred people in the Gevaudan region of southern France. Popular opinion was that it was a wolf, but survivors’ accounts suggest otherwise. Under considerable scrutiny from outside, King Louis XV mounted no fewer than three offensives aimed at delivering to him The Beast of Gevaudan. In his name, hundreds of wolves were slaughtered, but he never caught the real Beast. Perhaps he should have consulted with the wolves.

Time Period: 18th century France.
Ingredients: Accuser, Invincible, and Companion (and Wine, sort of).
Rule Limitation: No character creation. Could be played without a character sheet.

The boom only fuels the justly deserved reputation for vice of every sort.

Malleus Maleficarum

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005

Ingredients & Limitation: Companion, Accuser, Invincible, Uses Cards

Malleus Maleficarum is a game about how a small, rural, 16th century, European village unravels in an orgy of intrigue, fear, hatred, and fire during the height of the great witch hunts of the Inquisition. There is no magic and witches are not real; however, this is not reason enough to prevent the hunt, for the hunt is not about witches. The hunt is about envy. The hunt is about greed. The hunt is about those who are ruthless enough to orchestrate this destruction to further their dark designs with malicious precision.
